Zinester’s Guide to NYC

"If I could still walk the streets of New York among my People, I would use this truly funny and truly affordable guide book. It kicks ass." –Stephen Colbert •

Quite possibly the last wholly analog specimen of its kind.

The Zinester’s Guide to NYC is an anecdotal, illustrated, low budget, highly participatory, and now primarily historic guidebook that’ll cost you less than an Uber ride or a ticket to a movie that tries to trick you into thinking the East Village is in Toronto.

To hell with apps! Revisit a city that still exists in my heart and mind…

(Full disclosure: you probably should supplement with an app to figure out where you want to eat and drink. The Curse of the Zinester’s Guide to NYC tanked a lot of businesses and events within several years of publication. Thank heavens the Brooklyn Bridge is still standing!)

“I've been carting it around, reading it whenever I get the chance. I put a star next to places I've been and liked or highlight places that sound super cool. The descriptions are usually written by one to a few people (including BUST editor Emily Rems!) who actually live here. Each suggestion feels like a personal friend telling you about something awesome, with pros and cons that are usually spot on. It's made me feel downright silly for not knowing about such things as the Brooklyn Kitchen Cupcake Cook-Off in May or the NYC Dumpling Festival in October!”

– Kristina Uriegas, BUST

From Japanese breakfasts, art supplies, used books, and wisteria (free for the eating in Central Park) to punk rope, volunteer opportunities, storefront museums and subway musicians, the ZG2NYC captures the best of the early aughts, with supplemental contributions from over 50 New-York-based zine and indie comics publishers.

“With cute and frequently funny illustrations on every page, maps in the back complete with tips, and extensive lists of gift recommendations, prime graffiti locales, and the grossest things contributing writers have seen in New York (of which shit in various forms seems to appear most frequently), Zinester isn’t an ordinary guidebook.”

– Michelle Schusterman, Matador Network
